NATURAL PLACES
MARVIN GROVE
Featuring tall mature trees whose canopy
shelters small wildlife, Marvin Grove
provides an area of passive recreation for
walking, studying, and enjoying shade in an
area established by some of KU’s earliest
students and faculty. In the fall of 1878,
Chancellor James Marvin and three
companions planted walnuts throughout
what was then a rocky hillside known as
North Hollow. Additional tree plantings
followed and the campus wooded area was
renamed Marvin Grove in 1906. Over time,
the grove has expanded to cover about 10
acres bounded by Memorial Drive to the
south and west, Parking Lot 61 to the north,
and Mississippi Street and the parking
access road to the east. A tree inventory
conducted in 2015 mapped 201 trees
representing 28 species.
