JAYHAWKS
Across Campus
“CLASSIC JAYHAWK”
Kansas Memorial Union entry arch
Installed in 2003, this sculpture is a
more sturdy version of the original 30
“Jayhawks on Parade,” a fundraiser that
called on Kansas artists to create their own
interpretations of the mascot. A handful of
those Jayhawks are still in the area. While
most of those Jayhawks featured eclectic
designs, this sculpture is an unadorned
replica of Hal Sandy’s iconic “Smiling
Jayhawk” — making it a favorite spot for
selfies and graduation photos.
JAYHAWK COLLECTION
Kansas Union, Level 2
Boasting more than 1,000 items and valued
at over $250,000, this collection of Jayhawk
memorabilia is surely the most unusual
stop you’ll make on your tour of campus
birds. The collection was a generous gift of
James J. and Mary Ellen Ascher.
